Minor Injuries

The Phone First number for the Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda Minor Injuries 01443 444075. The centre is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4.30pm.

If your injury is not serious, you can get help from the minor Injuries department , rather than going to an A&E department. This will allow A&E staff to concentrate on people with serious, life-threatening conditions and will save you a potentially long wait.

Minor Injury’s will not treat life-threatening conditions or injuries – patients should call 999 or go straight to A&E.

A minor injury is:

  • A minor wound, cut or graze
  • Sprains and strains
  • Broken bones without deformity
  • Wound infections (excluding infection following surgery)
  • Minor burns and scalds
  • Minor head injuries
  • Insect and animal bites

A minor injury is not:

  • Chest pain
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Major injuries
  • Stomach pains
  • Gynaecological problems
  • Pregnancy problems
  • Allergic reactions
  • Overdoses
  • Alcohol related problems
  • Mental health problems

Wellbeing Co-ordinator

 

Wellbeing Coordinators help to connect people with a range of local, non-medical services and community groups. The service recognises that people’s health and wellbeing is affected by a range of social, economic and environmental factors.

What problems can they help with?

  • Housing issues – homeless, risk of eviction or maintenance issues
  • Financial issues – debt, benefits problems, budgeting support, benefits checks/applications
  • Lonely or isolated – not seeing anyone, befriending
  • Mental health – e.g. low level anxiety/depression
  • Bereavement
  • Domestic abuse
  • Caring responsibilities
  • Looking for community groups/activities
  • Food Bank vouchers
  • Accessing specialist services and support e.g. health conditions, education, training, volunteering and family issues.

What problems can’t they help with?

  • Moderate/severe mental health issues/mental health crisis
  • Patients needing medical advice or assistance.

How to access the service?

Patients can self refer by calling or emailing the Wellbeing Coordinators directly using the phone numbers or email addresses below dependent on the surgery they are registered with. A GP or other health professional can also refer a patient to the Wellbeing Coordinators.

Patients will be welcomed by the Wellbeing Coordinators and offered a telephone consultation. Face to face consultations may be offered depending on safety.

Common ailments scheme

 

The common ailments service offers patients access to free NHS advice and treatment for common ailments that cannot be managed by self care.

The service offers an alternative to making an appointment with the GP to discuss the following 26 conditions

  • Acne
  • Athletes Foot
  • Backache (acute)
  • Chickenpox
  • Cold sores
  • Colic
  • Conjunctivitis (bacterial)
  • Constipation
  • Dermatitis (dry skin)
  • Diarrhoea
  • Dry Eye
  • Haemorrhoids
  • Hayfever
  • Head Lice
  • Indigestion
  • Intertrigo
  • Ingrowing toenail
  • Mouth Ulcers
  • Nappy rash
  • Oral thrush
  • Ringworm
  • Scabies
  • Sore throat
  • Teething
  • Threadworm
  • Vaginal thrush
  • Verruca

The service can be used by any patient who lives in Wales or is registered to a Welsh GP practice. The patient must be able to attend the pharmacy in person.

If you are suffering with an eye conditions you should visit a local optometrist (optician) for a free NHS eye examination in the first instance. 

Sometimes the pharmacist may need to refer you to your GP or another healthcare professional if they are unable to treat your condition.

Can anyone use the service?

Patients can either be referred by their GP or other healthcare professional or can self-refer to this service. If you are unsure whether you need to use this service or see your doctor, please speak to the pharamacist for advice.

To use this service you must register with the pharmacy of your choice. You can register at any pharmacy and can choose to move to another pharmacy at any time if you need to use the service again.

What to expect

You will have a private consultation with the pharmacist in the pharmacy consultation room, this will usually take between 5 and 10 minutes.

You do not need to make an appointment but you may need to wait to see the pharmacist at busy times.

Your doctor (GP) will be sent information about the advice and treatment you have received.
